Mesothelioma,
the deadly cancer which has lead news statements for several years, is
contracted through exposure to airborne fibers of asbestos. Unfortunately, the
under-regulation of asbestos usage in years past, and probably still today, revealed
large numbers to airborne fibers and as a result thousands contracted the
disease. The number of people who have died from it have dramatically increased
for last years.
Mesothelioma
is caused by exposure to asbestos without sufficient protection. When a person
is exposed to asbestos, he/she inhales tiny asbestos fibres which are suspended
in the air. These fibres pass into the breathing system and end up becoming filed
in the lungs. An accumulation of asbestos fibres in the coating of the lungs
like this can cause close by tissues to deform and gradually causes what is
known as pleural mesothelioma. Accumulation of asbestos fibres in the
peritoneum (lining of the abdomen) can lead to peritoneal mesothelioma and
build up of fibres around the tissue of the heart can cause pericardial
mesothelioma. Asbestos fibres reach these places over time or because they have
been transported there by the lymphatic system.
Almost
everyone in the world has been exposed to asbestos in different levels. Because
of the exclusive characteristics of the disease. Those who have suffered only minimal exposure
are at risk of contracting the disease. In effect, virtually everyone has some
risk of contracting Mesothelioma.
Those who
have worked amongst asbestos are at risk. Construction workers, asbestos
manufacturers or those who have lived within a mile of an asbestos factory are
the people who have the major contact with asbestos. Those who are in contact
with these people are also at risk, because asbestos fibres can stick to
clothes and hair. People who are exposed to asbestos may carry fibers on their
skin and clothing. There people should shower and change clothes before leaving
work.
The
majority of people who are discovering that they have mesothelioma are elderly
men of about 60 – 70. This was the generation which worked with asbestos a lot
without sufficient protection.
Some analysis
indicates contact between mesothelioma and simian virus 40 (SV40), a virus
originally detected in monkeys. Many people may have been revealed to SV40 when
getting polio vaccinations between 1955 and 1963, because the vaccine was
developed using monkey cells. Once it was discovered that SV40 was connected to
certain cancers, the virus was eliminated from the polio vaccine. Whether SV40 improves
the risk of mesothelioma is a point of controversy, and more analysis are
needed.
One of the
most powerful factors affecting Mesothelioma contraction is genetics. Some people
who have been exposed to long periods and high amounts of asbestos have not
contracted the disease. In the event, doctors have determined that genetics
play a big part in identifying whether or not sufferers contract the disease. Sadly,
the gene variability which offers some level of capacity to the disease also
means that some are particularly suspectible to asbestos exposure.
Some
research links mesothelioma to the radioactive material thorium dioxide, which
was used along with X-rays to identify various health issues from the 20’s to
the 50’s. Mesothelioma has also been contracted to radiotherapy treatments to
the chest, such as those used to cure breast cancer or lymphoma.
