Short Basics of Mesothelioma



Mesothelioma is a cancer which strikes the mesothelium, a safety, two-layered cells layer that covers the internal organs of the body such as the lungs, heart and stomach body parts.

There are 3 types of mesothelioma: pleural, peritoneal and pericardial.

Mesothelioma is activated with exposure to asbestos.
Mesothelioma takes approximately between 25-45 years to develop.

The only known cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Work in an industry where the use of asbestos was prevalent – such as shipbuilding, construction, electric and etc – is dangerous.

Smoking cannot cause mesothelioma, but it is the significant cause of lung cancer.

Smokers who continue smoking after they have been clinically identified as having asbestosis have a much higher chance of developing mesothelioma.

About 2,500-3,000 people in America die each year from mesothelioma.

The first registered mesothelioma was in 1962. The patient was an Australian man who worked in the asbestos mines in the Wittenoom town from 1948-1950.
